Menstrual problems are certainly common, but that does not mean they are normal. Symptoms like heavy, irregular, missing, long, or short periods can be a sign of something deeper going on. Here is a comprehensive list of 15 of the most common menstrual problems.

    1. adenomyosis

    To start the list of menstrual problems is adenomyosis. This is where the uterine lining grows within the muscle of the uterine wall and can cause pain and heavy periods.


    2. amenorrhea

    Next on the list of menstrual problems is amenorrhea. This refers to the lack of menstruation or no periods.


    3. dysmenorrhea

    Dysmenorrhea is next on the list of menstrual problems. It is the medical term for painful periods.


    4. endometriosis

    Endometriosis is a condition where bits of tissue that are similar to the endometrium (uterine lining) grow in places other than inside the uterus. This menstrual problem results in severe period pain.


    5. endometrial hyperplasia

    Another to add to the list of menstrual problems is endometrial hyperplasia. This is a thickening of the uterine wall that can result in long periods or can be seen with elevated estrogen levels.


    6. fibroids

    Fibroids are next on the list of menstrual problems. Fibroids can also be cal leiomyoma or myoma. They are a benign growth of the uterine muscle. Fibroids may not cause symptoms but can be linked to heavy bleeding or pain.


    7. hypothalamic amenorrhea

    Another condition on the list of menstrual problems is hypothalamic amenorrhea. This is the lack of a menstrual period for more than six months when no other medical diagnosis can be found.


    8. infertility

    Next on the list of menstrual problems is infertility. This refers to the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 or more months of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.


    9. luteal phase defect

    Luteal phase defect is next on the list of menstrual problems. This refers to a short luteal phase thta can result in low progesterone levels.


    10. ovarian cysts

    A functional ovarian cyst forms when your ovarian follicle does not successfully rupture and release its egg. Some stay small and don’t result in symptoms, while large cysts can. Ovarian cysts are different than the condition PCOS, which we will go over next in the list of menstrual problems.


    11. polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

    Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is another menstrual problem. This is a condition characterized by (1) lack of ovulation, (2) elevated androgen levels, and (3) multiple small ‘cysts’ that are abnormally small follicles in a state of partial development. Diagnosis is made with two of these three.


    12. premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

    Next on the list of menstrual problems is premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS is a collection of symptoms that typically occur in the luteal phase prior to menstruation.


    13. premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

    Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is next on the list of menstrual problems. It is a severe and sometimes disabling extension of PMS.


    14. primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)

    Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is another on the list of menstrual problems. It is the loss of normal function of the ovaries before age 40, or early menopause.


    15. post-birth control syndrome (PBCS)

    Last on the list of menstrual problems is post-birth control syndrome, which refers to menstrual irregularities that arise generally within the four to six month time after going off of hormonal birth control.
